I am beginning a new series called “Teach Catholic Kids About The Mass.” Today, I wanted to share something with you that we actually did years ago. It’s a craft with a tiny altar, tiny altar pieces, and big fun for Catholic kids!

The great thing about this Mass set for kids is that it’s cheap, easy to put together, and doesn’t take up much space at all. In fact, it’s all self-contained in one little wooden box.

Materials Needed To Make Your Own Play Mass Kit:

  • Wooden Box (not those super tiny ones, but something about the size of half of a shoe box will do.)
  • Felt- one piece each of the following colors: green, red, white, purple (any other “Liturgical” colors you are interested in adding)
  • One Small golden “chalice” (You can find these at craft stores. Sometimes you can find them as small “trophies” at the Dollar Tree. You can clip the big handles off with scissors. Be sure to also check the wedding favor aisle at your craft store. This will probably be your most specialty piece to find.)cheap and easy mass kit for kids
  • Tiny wooden vases. Again, just check in that wooden st
uff aisle at your local craft store, and think outside the box for finding things that could work as a vase.
  • Small wooden circle. Draw a cross on it for Eucharist.
  • Small fake flowers for your vases
  • 2 white birthday candles
  • Two wooden thimbles to use as candle holders. Wad some foil inside to give it a bottom and help the candles stay.

  1. This is great! I made a bigger homemadeone years ago…For the chalics I boght a plastic goblet and spray painted it gold. 🙂 and I bought electric candles so they would really light…but those didnt last long, lol

  2. So cute! I just showed my 4-year-old the picture and asked her what it looked like. She said “chocolate roses!” When I asked if it also looked like church she said something like “oh, yeah.” Haha…
I think a trip to the craft store is in order!

    • We just made it the other day and the girls painted everything. A new JoAnn’s I went to didn’t have a wedding aisle (what?????), but my oldest just painted an extra of the vases with yellow and gold glitter. We also used the small battery powered tea lights. So cute!!!

  3. P.S. I love the glitter candles!

  4. This is so cute!! I love your ideas. We made our own not too long ago but it is regular sized so the children can “play mass”. It has made a huge difference in how my 3 year old behaves during mass. He seems to understand so much more now. 🙂 Stop by and check it out if you like:

  5. I just used your page to make my daughter first holy communion altar diorama for her 2nd grade religion project. Thank you so much for your ideas!!

This is fantastic! I can’t wait to make mine, thank you for such a good idea x

  7. Hi Lacy thank you for introducing a mass kit As a catechist who presents altar work to children I hope you do not mind if I share a few suggestions to complete your kid. Each altar has
A white linen, chalice, paten, a cross, 2 candles and 2 candle holders. These are essential
You can also add a snuffer and small hand bell, white host.
Since you have a wooden cross you can add a paten. The liturgical colors are worn by the priest the altar linen is always white even if it is on top of another linen.
I remember playing mass with my siblings when I was a kid Thank you for sharing your zeal for God and respect for children . Peace & Joy
