How To Make A Yarn Doll Angel

I have loved yarn dolls since I was a little girl, and this Christmas I was in the mood to make some with my kids to share this timeless craft with them! Here’s the angel we made.

Supplies Needed To Make A Yarn Doll:

  • Yarn (about 30 Yards per doll. Perhaps a bit more for dolls with dresses, and a bit less for dolls with legs.)
  • A book or piece of cardboard
  • Scissors

Supplies Needed To Embellish The Yarn Doll Into An Angel:

  • Wired ribbon (preferably white or silver or gold)
  • Hot Glue
  • Gold Pipe Cleaner

The first step to making a yarn doll angel is to make a yarn doll. I’ve made a step by step picture here on how to do that.

First you’re going to wrap all your yarn around a book about the size of a standard novel, or a piece of cardboard. Make it taunt but not super tight. Slide the yarn off the book and tie a piece of yarn around the loops really tight. Tie another piece of yarn around the “neck” to create the head, again, super tight. Pull yarn from both sides of the yarn doll for the “arms”. My OCD daughter Lydia would like to share that the arms should be 20 pieces of yarn each. 😀 Tie more pieces of yarn around the “wrists” of the doll. Tie another piece around the “waist”, but not as tightly as the neck piece. At this point you can either trim the bottom of the doll to make a “dress” or separate the yarn into 2 pieces to make 2 “legs” and tie yarn around the “ankles” of the doll.

To embellish the yarn doll into an angel, the first thing you need to do is take your wired ribbon and tie a big bow.

This gets hot glued to the angel’s back to create the wings.

Also, fashion a gold halo from a piece of pipe cleaner, and hot glue it to the top of the head.

I also hot glued a little ribbon around the waist of my angel to give her a little pop. Here are the final results!

If you want your yarn doll angel to be able to stand up, you can place an upside down small cup under her skirt. Voila! She could also go on the top of a Christmas tree.

    Hi Lacy
I need some help, Do you have an easy way to explain mortal sin verses venial sin to second graders?

    • Sara Reinstatler says

      Melinda,
I like the analogy of a flower in a garden. Our souls are the flower…if we commit a mortal sin, our soul dies. If we commit a venial sin, our soul starts to wither, but is not dead. But God, being all powerful, can restore our souls to new life through the sacrament of confession and penance.

      Hope this helps!
