I’m In The Lord’s Army- Christian Song and Craft for Kids

In keeping with my series of Christian song crafts, today’s theme is “I’m in the Lord’s Army”, which is one of Julian’s favorite songs!

If you don’t know the Lord’s Army song, check out this video to learn the lyrics and hand motions.

Supplies Needed to Make Your Lord’s Army Hat:

  • Newspaper (1/2 sheet- 11×21 inches)
  • Glue stick
  • Craft Paint (I used acrylic)
  • Sponge
  • Leaves/Greenery

How to fold a Military-Style Newspaper Hat:

  1. Start with half a piece of newspaper. For a larger (adult sized) hat, you can use a full piece of newspaper.
  2. Fold the paper in half horizontally.
  3. Fold the paper vertically to make a crease
  4. Unfold the fold from step 3.
  5. Fold both of the top corners down to the center fold (like you’re making a paper airplane).
  6. Fold both of the bottom corners up, also to the center fold, but only fold the top layer.
  7. Fold the bottom point up to the middle.
  8. Fold the top point down to the middle.
  9. Fold the bottom flap up to the top. Fix this fold with a glue stick.
  10. Flip the whole paper over.
  11. Fold the bottom of the paper up to to bottom points of the trapezoid shape to make a crease.
  12. Unfold the fold from step 11.
  13. Fold the bottom corners up.
  14. Fold the bottom point up to the middle.
  15. Lift the flap up and fix this fold with a glue stick.
  16. Open your hat at the bottom.

You figured out how to make a newspaper hat! What fun!

Isn’tย  my Violet adorable? And for anyone who’s wondering, yes, my child is wearing her shirt both inside-out and backwards in those pictures. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ok, now it’s time to decorate out hats like they’re camouflage. This part of the craft was lots of fun! Start by collecting a variety of leaves from outside.

Next, squeeze some camouflage-colored paint onto a paper plate. I used light green, dark green, dark brown, and peach colored paint. Sponge the paint on in random blobs.

Once the newspaper hat is mostly covered, you can begin using your leaves from outside as stencils. Hold down a leaf, sponge paint over the top of it in a different color than what’s underneath, and remove the leaf.

Decorate both sides of your hat like camouflage. Once the paint is dry, you’ve got yourself a hat!

My boys are going to LOVE this! Miles already tells people that his name means soldier in latin. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Alexandra M. says

We love this song at our house, too! Thanks for the creative craft and a great way to explore outside, too, when looking for our greenery.

  3. These are great crafts to go with some very popular songs! I have to teach VBS music this year in our parish, and I am looking for the sign language for the Our Father. You wouldn’t happen to know where I can locate a pdf tutorial for that, do you?

  4. Alicia @Through My Is says

My middle son was obsessed with this song when he was smaller. He used to tell people his name was Army and would only wear camo. I have a hilarious photo of him all dressed up. If I can find it I will put it on the Catholic Icing facebook page

  5. This is so adorableโ€”and what a cute picture of that little boy in his army hat! I absolutely love the “Lord’s Army” song and can’t wait to teach it to my children’s ministry students. I know that they’ll love the song and the army hat craft, too. (And can I tell you how excited I am that this craft can be done with very inexpensive materials?)

  6. I quickly found myself saying, “I love this lady…thank you Lord!”
