Saint Feast Days In February (And Other Days To Celebrate With Kids!)

I love coming up with fun and creative ways to celebrate the church year with kids, and February is full of fun Saint feast days to celebrate! Some of these feast days include St. Brigid, St. Bakhita, Our Lady of Lourdes, and also Saint Valentine! The month of February is also dedicated to the Holy Family, and is usually the month that Lent starts in. You can find all of my month to month post on living liturgically here. When you’re starting to teach your kids about the lives of the Saints, I suggest starting with a Saint picture book treasury that includes a lot of short stories you can read together. This will give you a good starting place and then you can add to your library of Saint books over the years. I think this Picture Book Of Saints is a good beginning Saint book for Catholic families. I will mark the Saints below that have stories from this book. You can find all of my favorite Saint books for kids here.

I also recommend having a good children’s Bible available to read from, as it will also include many stories of the Saints. You can see my post with my favorite Catholic children’s bibles here, but my family absolutely loves The Jesus Storybook Bible.

February Saint Feast Days To Celebrate

This list does not include Saints for every single day of February, but some highlights that are good for kids.

February 1- St. Brigid’s Feast Day

Irish Saint
Known as the Bride of Ireland
Baptized by St. Patrick
Patron Saint of Ireland, poets, scholars, farmers, children who’s parents are not married, new babies, fertility, nursing mothers, and dairy workers

Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid Craft – Okay, so it’s early for Saint Patrick, but you could get this set and make Saint Brigid in February and save Saint Patrick for March. Ta da! Two feast days in one!

February 2- Candlemas/Presentation of the Lord

Candlemas is a Catholic feast day that happens every year on February 2. In Jewish tradition at the time, a baby boy was to be presented at the temple 40 days after he was born to be dedicated to God, so Candlemas is 40 days after Christmas morning.

I grew up looking forward to having my throat blessed on this feast day with candles. During the blessing of the throat, this prayer is said:

“Through the intercession of St. Blase may God deliver you from ills of the throat and other ills.”

February 5- St. Agatha’s Feast Day

Martyr
From Sicily

February 8- St. Josephine Bakhita’s Feast Day

Born in Sudan, a country in North East Africa
Kidnapped and sold as a slave at age 8
Patron Saint of Sudan and Africa, and against human trafficking
Saint Josephine Bakhita’s story is found on page 126 of Picture Book Of Saints

February 10- St. Scholastica’s Feast Day

Patron Saint of Benedictine nuns
St. Benedict saw her soul rising to heaven in the form of a dove upon her death

February 11- Our Lady of Lourdes’s Feast Day

Very well known Marian apparition
Appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France

February 18- Blessed John of Fiesole (Fra Angelico)

Very famous Italian painter from early Renaissance
Patron Saint of artists
joined the Dominicans and took the name “Fra Giovanni”
Because his art famously included so many angels, he became known as “Fra Angelico”
Famous works include The Annunciation, and Descent form the Cross
Beatified by St. Pope John Paul II
