craft easter crosses with leftover egg dye

Supplies Needed:

  • Plain White Paper Towels- no patterns!
  • Leftover Easter Egg Dye (or some food color and vinegar)
  • Scissors

Yep, that’s it. 🙂 If you don’t have leftover egg dye, just put a little food color, water, and a few tablespoons of vinegar in a cup. It’s not rocket science.

It always seems like such a waste to dump out the leftover Easter egg dye. Likewise, the more kids you have, the less and less eggs they each get to dye. I mean, how many boiled eggs can we be expected to eat for goodness sakes?! So what to do with them when you’re out of eggs and everyone is still in a crafty mood? This, of course! 😉

First, you need to learn how to make make easy fold-and-snip-crosses out of paper towels. The kind of paper towel you get is important. You need plain white paper towels, and it’s better to get the kind that tear off into smaller rectangles rather than the giant squares. If all you can find are the square kind, you can cut them into rectangles before beginning.

First, bring the bottom right corner up, line up the left edges, and fold.

Next, bring up the bottom left corner up, line up the diagonal line, and fold.

Then, bring the whole bottom triangle up, and fold.

Now take your entire paper towel and fold it in half vertically.

That’s it. Unfold and…

Voila! You have a cross!

Now, here’s the fun part! Before you unfold your cross, dip the different corners into your egg dye to “tie dye” your crosses.

The kids had a blast making these! My 7 and 5 year old were able to do this on their own, my 3 year old needed help folding and cutting before she started to dip. They had so much fun I was running out of space for the crosses to dry- lol!

You can make more intricate patterns by folding them in half again before you start dipping. I loved some of the designs we were so easily able to create!

Allow them to dry flat. Look at this lovely stack of ours once they are all dry!

Once they’re dry, you can hang  them in  your window with little pieces of clear tape. The sun shines through them like stained glass- they really are beautiful!
