Teaching Kids The 5 Steps To A Good Confession

We are preparing for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation at home this year, and it’s coming up for Lydia very soon! I made a printable set of the “5 Steps To A Good Confession” as from the First Communion Catechism. You can tape the signs onto your actual steps at home (or anywhere else) for your kids to see and memorize in the weeks leading up to their First Penance.

We have had these on our stairs leading to our playroom for about a week now, and Lydia told me yesterday, “Mommy, I almost have these completely memorized because I read them every time I go up the stairs!”. This made my heart so happy. Hooray for passive teaching!

I put them on the top steps because you actually see them as you walk up the stairs (and you don’t have to lie down on the floor to do so). lol.

Each sign has a picture to help children understand the meaning of the 5 steps to a good confession. While it’s great to memorize stuff, it’s also important that it’s being understood and taken to heart. When you first hang the signs, walk the steps with your kids and explain them. Then leave them in your home for awhile so they’re reminded.

I made a sign for the top that says “You Are Forgiven!” At our house, I taped it on the door of the playroom, but you could also simply tape it to your top step.

  1. Pinned it! (my daughter will be making her First Communion next year) I never seem to think of the little things – like frequent simple exposure – that are so super important. I have a question… I remember you said you offered up your very First Communion for your dad’s conversion (LOVE that story, BTW!), and I was wondering where/how you got the idea as a child. That would be an amazing thing for my daughter to do, but I feel funny suggesting it. And yet, I fear if I ask her to come up with something herself, it will be something pretty silly. Thank you!

PS – I’ve been meaning to offer – I do ebook proofreading, and if you ever would like me to look something over, I’d be happy to do so. For “friends” (I hope that’s not too familiar, I’ve been reading you for a couple of years!), I just ask for a final copy, no fee. Let me know if you’re interested.

What a great idea Lacy! Very clever used in conjunction with the stair steps! Great job!

    • I agree. This is a great idea! I ordered two copies, as I have two households with children who will soon be entering the age for First Reconciliation and First Communion. (And, I may share a link to this page with the Director of Religious Ed at our parish, if you don’t mind.)

      • Awesome! My daughter memorized these steps in no time once they were hanging in our house. 🙂

    • Hi Margarita –

I hope that I have understood everything correctly in your message since I used Google Translate for it.

I am not sure what else you would like to know about the project. The post pretty much tells all about it, so be sure to check that out.

If you are wanting to know how to get the printables though, they are free for email subscribers, so you can subscribe to get them. (Once you subscribe, you’ll be given a link and password to access the Subscriber Bonuses page.) Or, you may purchase it for $1 USD here: https://shop.catholicicing.com/product/steps-to-a-good-confession/

      I hope that helps!
