Mardi Gras Pancake Recipe (In Green, Gold, And Purple- Super Easy!)

Did you know that sometimes Mardi Gras is called “Pancake Tuesday”? That’s because it became very traditional to make pancakes on Mardi Gras because it could use up all your fat, dairy, and sugar before Lenten fasting started. Nowadays we don’t tend to fast all of these things for the length of Lent, but the tradition of pancakes on Fat Tuesday still stands! I was thinking for Pancake Tuesday, why not make the pancakes festive Mardi Gras colors?! So that’s exactly what we did, and I’m going to share the recipe with all of you today!

Mardi Gras Pancake Recipe

Ingredients Needed For Mardi Gras Pancakes

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or vegetable oil
  • Purple, yellow, and green food color
  • Several bowls to divide your batter into
Start by mixing all of your ingredients, which I always do in our blender. This way it’s easy to mix, and then also super easy to pour on the griddle! Don’t over-blend it, just combine the ingredients.

Only this time, before pouring it on the griddle, you’ve got to pour it into 3 separate bowls so that you can dye it 3 different colors to be all festive for Mardi Gras.

Green, purple, and gold batter

Mix the food coloring in thoroughly until the colors are completely blended.

Mixed dyed batter

Pour the batter on a medium heated griddle and wait for the air bubbles to stop. Then flip the pancake to cook also on the other side.

Stack them up – one color on each plate! Voila! Mardi Gras pancakes, fresh from the griddle!
