Pray, Fast, Give Alms– a Lenten Craft for Kids

We as Catholics focus on 3 things during Lent– Praying, Fasting, and Giving Alms. I wanted to make a craft with my kids to introduce this concept and help them plan their Lent. This craft is also a great one to hang up during Lent as a reminder!

Supplies Needed:

  • Assorted Paper
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Glue (I like glue dots for this one)
  • White Paper (or small paper plates)
  • Plastic fork, knife, and/or spoon
  • Pipe Cleaner
  • 11 Beads

We started with a piece of purple paper, since that’s the Liturgical color of Lent. You can write “LENT” at the top of your paper.

The symbol for “Pray” is a little rosary. You can see my post on how to craft these rosaries here.

Write “Pray” near the rosary. On this one, I wrote “pray” on purple paper using white out.

The symbol for “Fast” is an empty plate. If you don’t have a small paper plate, just cut a circle out of paper. Glue down your plate, fork, and spoon. Write “Fast” in the middle of the empty plate. I like to use glue dots to stick on the plastic silverware. A glue gun is a great alternative, but not great for kids. (FYI- You can now get silverized plastic silverware that really looks real!)

The symbol for “Give” is a hand with some coins. You can use circles of yellow paper, or circles of foil. You could also save your wrappers from your St. Nicholas coins for this. Trace your hand onto some paper and cut it out. Glue it down with the coins on top. Then write “Give”.

I also added this craft on our Lenten display board.

In this picture, you can see our Lenten calendars, our crown of thorns for sacrifices, the box that we “bury the alleluia” in, our 40 coins for alms giving, and our offering box.

And here is a picture from a few years ago of our fully “Un-decorated” Lenten mantel.

  1. Just to let you know. I absolutely LOVE your ideas! Thank you so much for sharing!!!! I have 4 kids and only wish I would have had some of these activities for the older ones when they were young!!! I use many of the ideas for a first grade psr class I teach and they are always a hit!

  2. Love the Lent display! Great ideas as always! Pinning! Blessed Lent to you Lacy! 🙂

  3. Love it! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  4. This is a great idea! I’d love for you to come share it at my Lenten link-up!

  5. Love this! What are the white triangular things in the background on your board – little baskets?

    • They are origami cups (very easy to fold). I had a St. Therese quote about doing good deeds for people on the fronts, and everyone had a cup with their name on it. Whenever you did a secret good deed for that person, you put a slip of paper in their cup telling them. The slips of paper were read on Easter.

  6. Thanks so much for sharing. Your ideas a always so great and helpful when I am planning last minute for my CCD class.

  7. My 6 year old daughter had a great time making this! Thank you for sharing all your ideas.

  8. I love your Lenten ideas! I am using these as a 3 part craft during our Liturgy of the Word time during mass (we only have 20 minutes). The first week we did the rosaries and boy, did the little ones love making these! I couldn’t get them to stop, even after it was time to go back to their families in church! My friend made the fasting part last week and tomorrow I am doing the giving part. Thank you for all you do!
