Ideas for Celebrating the Feast of St. Padre Pio

St. Padre Pio has a feast day coming up on September 23. If I were to rank St. Padre Pio on a popularity scale from 1-10, I would give him a 10! He sure seems to be a ‘crowd pleaser’, and there’s no question as to why if you know his story. I have a special post about how to celebrate Saint feast days at home with your kids, and you can find more Saints to celebrate in September here. Now let’s take a look at these super fun ideas for celebrating the feast of St. Padre Pio!

St. Padre Pio “Cheat Sheet”

It’s always easier to teach what you know, so I would like to start by glancing at a quick overview of St. Padre Pio. That will help you understand the upcoming resources I have to share!

  • Italian
  • Birth name Francesco Forgione
  • joined the Order of Franciscan Capuchins
  • Priest
  • had stigmata (the wounds of Christ), and his wounds smelled like perfume
  • he saw and spoke to Jesus, Mary, and his guardian angel as a child
  • heard as many as 25,000 confessions per year!
  • celebrated Mass each day and suffered extra as he celebrated
  • known for physically wrestling with demons
  • known for levitating and performing miracles
  • famous quote “Pray, hope, and don’t worry”
  • could be in more than one place at a time (bilocation) to visit the sick, pray, etc.
  • his body is partially incorrupt and on display in Rome
  • died September 23, 1968, canonized by St. Pope John Paul II

So basically, a very very interesting Saint with lots of amazing aspects! Ok, I think we are ready to look at some ways to celebrate St. Padre Pio with kids.

St. Padre Pio Picture Books And Videos For Kids

There are several options for watching a free children’s video about St. Padre Pio, so you can choose whichever set of Saint videos your kids like the best.

Here is the Saints For Kids video of St. Padre Pio.

And here is the My Catholic Family video for kids about St. Padre Pio.

When you’re starting to teach your kids about the lives of the Saints, I suggest starting with a Saint picture book treasury that includes a lot of short stories you can read together. This will give you a good starting place and then you can add to your library of Saint books over the years. I think this Picture Book Of Saints is a good beginning Saint book for Catholic families. I will mark the Saints below that have stories from this book. Saint Padre Pio’s story is found on page 132 of Picture Book Of Saints

You can also find this super affordable picture book about St. Padre Pio for kids here. I generally love these little books!

More Celebration Ideas

Here are even more ways you can easily celebrate the feast day of St. Padre Pio with your family:
  • Go to confession. St. Padre Pio was a renowned confessor, so what better way to celebrate him than to schedule your own trip for this Sacrament?
  • Learn about your guardian angel. St. Padre Pio had a big connection with his guardian angel, so be sure to check out all of my guardian angel resources for kids here
  • Eat Italian food. He was from Italy, so why not enjoy some delicious Italian cuisine for dinner?
  • Drink Cappuccino. Whether you make your own or pick some up from your favorite coffee joint, the name is tied up with the Order of Franciscan Capuchins since the drink shares the color of the brown robes they wear, so this would be a fun way to celebrate.
